October 6, 2024
This Thursday, October 10th is our PTO's largest fundraiser, The Beagle Dash. All of our students will participate. It was a new event last year and wow, our students loved the music, the different ways they were asked to complete their laps, and the overall energy was infectious! Your student (should have) brought home a flyer last week and a badge with a QR code on it, on Thursday. Fundraising is happening now! Please see the PTO's website for further information. Because of the response rate last week students earned (their families helped them earn!) a celebration day - tomorrow (Monday) is mis-match day for those who want to participate.
If you haven't yet signed up for conferences, please do so ASAP. We expect to meet with each of our students' adults on Thursday, October 17 or Friday, October 18. We thank you in advance for delaying any possible trips until after we've met.
Looking forward - Lake Bluff will celebrate Halloween on Wednesday, October 30. Students are invited to wear costumes during the final hour of the school day. If their costume is nondescript (think Steve Jobs, black turtle neck and jeans), they may wear it the entire day. Because our celebration will start with a school-wide parade and all students will see everyone (adults are invited to observe outside, along the front sidewalk), all costumes must be K4 friendly. If a costume might scare a 4 year old, it doesn't belong at school. As a rule, no weapons, masks, or gore are allowed. After the all-school parade, our students will enjoy a celebration in our classroom, organized by our room parents. Look for more information from them in the coming weeks. 🎃

Returning assessmentsOur students have accomplished a lot in the first month of school including taking assessments in maths, social studies, and ELA (English Language Arts). We have years of experience teaching 5th and 6th graders and know that their scores on assessments are as much a reflection of what they know how to share what they know.
We are actively teaching new content AND how to prepare for and show/share what they know. Please remind your student that no score ever is a reflection of who they are or what they are capable of. Assessments are check-ins, opportunities to try new/different ways to prepare (including filling out and using the review packet to study with an adult at home). We share this information with them and can tell when adults at home do too. What they are learning is just as important as how they are working towards proficiency and mastery. Orchestra and BandBand students brought home their new lesson schedule last week for October and November on the Band Lesson Schedule page.
Orchestra students brought home their schedules on Thursday for October through January. Their schedules are posted on the Orchestra Lesson Schedule page too. Students will have their lesson on the same day each week but the time will shift to ensure they don't miss the same 30 minutes each week. Please help your student remember to bring their instrument and music on their lesson day. For many, it's an upsetting way to start their day when they realize they forgot their instrument and/or music. Thank you in advance! |
Conference Sign-upParent/caregiver conferences are held twice a year, once in the fall on October 17 & 18 and again in March on the 13 &14. We look forward to the opportunity to meet with the adults of each of our students. Next month's conference is a check-in to see how the first six weeks of school have gone from your perspective and ours.
Conferences held in March are student-led. Each student reflects on where they have been, what they are doing now, and where they want to go next for each content area. Here is a link to the web-based conference sign-up. Thanks to the 20 of you who have already signed up! Classroom JobsThose who applied and were granted a position started their work two weeks ago. "Training" will continue this week for different responsibilities. We are grateful 33 of our 46 students stepped forward and applied! The most popular positions were: phone answerer, bin inspector, and herpetologist.
Homework and the content pagePlease see our Content Page for specific updates related to students' learning.
Lake Bluff ExpectationsThis slide deck was created by Ms. French (principal) and Mrs. Benedict (dean). We shared it with our students so they know what's expected and can hold themselves and others responsible for their actions.
Students with Smart Watches were keenly interested in slide 6. We will thank you in advance for helping your student shift their watch to "school mode" and not contacting them during the school day. |
